It is one of the most common hydration questions, and the short answer is: yes, at reasonable intake, coffee and tea count toward your daily fluid — roughly cup for cup. The caffeine does not cancel the water, and the idea that a cup of coffee "takes out more than it puts in" has been tested and found wanting.
Caffeine is a mild diuretic, which is why the myth persists. But at the amounts people actually drink — one to four cups — the diuretic effect is small enough that the fluid roughly balances out. A body of research on this specific question found no meaningful net fluid loss from coffee or tea at ordinary intake. That makes them fluid-positive drinks, not fluid-neutral or negative.
The one qualifier is the strong stuff: heavily caffeinated energy drinks and very high consumption sit outside that finding. For the usual coffee and tea rotation, counting them toward the day's fluid is reasonable.
For a stone-prone person, the fluid benefit comes with an oxalate footnote, and the two drinks are not equal:

Coffee is low-oxalate and effectively a free fluid. Black tea carries more oxalate — 14 mg per cup is still Safe, but a day of several strong cups starts to add up, which is why tea gets a "fine at one to two cups" line rather than an unlimited one. Green tea generally sits lower than black.
Count your morning coffee and the afternoon tea toward the day's fluid, and keep plain water as the base of the plan. The practical sequence: water as the everyday default, coffee and tea as counted additions, and a citrus option — lemon in water or lightly sweetened lemonade — when you want something that also helps the stone side. If you are a heavy black-tea drinker with a stone history, trimming toward coffee or green tea is the one adjustment the oxalate column suggests.
