Three daily servings of dairy deliver roughly 800-1,000 mg of calcium, and calcium from food binds oxalate in the gut before it reaches the kidneys. This is the single most consistent dietary lever in calcium oxalate stone prevention. The new guidelines' acceptance of full-fat dairy removes a reason patients might have chosen skim versions; what matters for stones is the calcium and the absence of added sugar, not the fat content.
The juice guidance matches the stone picture as well. Juice concentrates sugar and, in large amounts, has been linked in a June 2026 Circulation study to higher adult blood pressure when consumed heavily in childhood. For stones, the issue is displacement: a glass of juice often replaces milk or water, which are the two beverages stone patients want as defaults. Whole fruit keeps the fiber and slows the sugar.
The guidelines' stance on non-nutritive sweeteners is new and firm, but the stone math is more relaxed. Diet soda measures zero oxalate, and the stone literature does not treat sweeteners as stone ingredients. The real question is what the drink replaces. A patient who swaps soda for diet soda gains nothing on the oxalate ledger but may still miss the calcium that milk would have provided. The stone version of the sweetener debate is simple: water and milk first, diet drinks as an occasional option, and no expectation that a sweetener fixes a hydration or calcium gap.

The national guidelines are built for the general population, and the stone diet agrees with them on structure: whole foods, dairy at meals, juice limited, sugar measured. The stone diet adds two layers the guidelines do not cover.
