It is a fair question, because "carbonated" gets lumped into one bucket in a lot of people's heads. The short answer splits the bucket in two: plain seltzer and unsweetened sparkling water behave like water for stone purposes, while cola sits in a different category for a different reason — and the reason is not the bubbles.
Cola drinks contain phosphoric acid, which adds a phosphorus load that most other carbonated drinks do not have. That phosphorus is the concern, not the carbonation. A 2006 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that followed thousands of postmenopausal women found lower bone density among cola drinkers, but not among women who drank non-cola carbonated drinks. The same split applies to stone thinking: the phosphorus in cola is the variable worth watching, and plain seltzer simply does not have it.
The bubbles themselves do nothing to promote stones. Carbonation is carbon dioxide dissolved in water, which has no meaningful effect on urinary calcium, oxalate, or uric acid.
Here is the part that often gets missed: sparkling water counts fully toward daily fluid intake. Since the single most reliable stone-prevention move is keeping urine dilute, a plain seltzer is a stone-neutral, hydration-positive choice. For someone who finds plain water boring, unsweetened sparkling water is one of the better swaps available.

On oxalate, every one of these is effectively zero. The real sorting happens on other grounds: added sugar, added phosphorus, and whether the drink is replacing water or adding to it.
Two caveats keep the story honest. First, "flavored" sparkling water is not always innocent — check for added sugar, and note that citrus flavoring adds citric acid, which is actually stone-friendly but can be harder on tooth enamel. Second, tonic water is not seltzer: it carries quinine and usually a meaningful sugar load. For daily hydration, plain unsweetened sparkling water is the pick; treat cola and sugary sodas as the occasional item.
