The phrase "kidney stone" hides four different conditions, and the diet that helps one can do nothing — or even work against — another. The single most useful thing a stone-forming person can do, before adjusting anything, is learn which type they form. Most people never do, and then they apply generic advice to a specific problem.

The Four Types, Separated

Calcium oxalate is the big one — roughly 70 to 80 percent of stones. It forms when calcium and oxalate combine in the urine. A uric acid former should trim purines and fructose and lean into produce. Guessing the type — or skipping the lab analysis — is how a person ends up on the wrong diet.
