Compared with the least DASH-like fifth of participants, the most DASH-like fifth had a 45 percent lower stone risk in men (relative risk 0.55) and a 40-42 percent lower risk in women (RR 0.58 and 0.60). The protection held even among people with lower calcium intake.

What a DASH-Style Pattern Actually Is

The DASH score rewards eight things: fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes, low-fat dairy, and whole grains in — and sodium, sweetened drinks, and red or processed meats out. The striking part is what this does to stone chemistry. The high-DASH participants ate more calcium, potassium, magnesium, and even more oxalate — yet had fewer stones. The pattern works not by removing oxalate but by surrounding it: calcium from dairy binds oxalate in the gut, potassium and magnesium support urine chemistry, and cutting sodium and sugary drinks removes the drivers of high urine calcium.

That is the part worth understanding. A DASH-style plate includes spinach and almonds — the very foods stone lists usually flag — and still lowers risk, because the protective parts of the pattern outweigh the oxalate load. This is why nutrition research keeps concluding that eating patterns beat food-level bans.
